Life is easy. Don’t Stress. Just do it. Be the Zen. – RS
Striving for peace, inside and out.
– a commentary by Rick Sherréll that originally appeared in the Pensacola News Journal on Wednesday, April 9, 1997. It has since become my signature signoff and grown to mean much more to me on my journey.
————–
In my travels around Pensacola, I often meet people who say they read my columns on a regular basis. They often verify this fact by the use of a simple hand gesture and a single word: “Peace” – my signature signoff.
It’s flattering to know you read me often enough to be familiar with that single word that has become a trademark of sorts. A few times it was left off when the column needed to be shortened to fit in this inflexible space. A comment from a caller let me know the impact of this simple word: “Well, next time take something else out, but not that!”
When I’m having trouble coming up with a topic or a way to express my thoughts, Managing Editor Mike Ryan (also known as “The King of Pun”) usually is helpful.
“Well, I don’t know, but I can help you with your close,” he says. “Peace.”
Thanks a lot, Mike.
Flashback
Peace, in a historical context, is a ‘60s word. Along with the symbol formed by raising the index and middle fingers, it was used by the cool people of the day and those who opposed war. I don’t count myself among them; I was in grade school at the time.
I don’t use the word just because it’s groovy. (A generalized term of approval meaning very pleasing or attractive and another ‘60s thing.) I use it because it means something to me.
I would like to say that it’s a way of life, but instead I’ll say it’s a goal in life.
According to Webster
To me, “peace” means: freedom from disagreement or quarrels; harmony; concord. That means with neighbors, friends, co-workers, family and anyone else who considers themselves the same as or different from me.
It means “peace of mind”: an undisturbed state of mind; absence of mental conflict; serenity. Achieving a tranquil state of mind is the first step in the long journey to wisdom and enlightenment.
It means “at peace”: free from war; quiet in repose. That can only be achieved by surrounding myself with others who are also intent on achieving peace.
It means “keep the peace”: to avoid or prevent violation of law and public order. It’s difficult to be at peace without a safe peaceful world around you.
It means “make peace”: to end hostilities, settle arguments, etc. I try to always keep in mind that our similarities are far more important than our differences.
Peace is a goal that I am trying to turn into a way of life.
I strive for peace in every aspect of my life. I strive for it in my actions, in my reactions and in my interactions. It’s what I try to send out, hoping that it’s what I’ll get back.
It’s what I wish for everybody.
PEACE.
Rick
